Unfortunately, Cults managed to make consistency a bad thing in this album. Sounding almost monotonous, only a few tracks were noted to have an almost unique personality. Regardless, Static still made me feel like I was at a party room full of people, but perpetually in a trance. Are you talking to me? I wouldn't know! This album also birthed their biggest song, the ever so dreamy "Always Forever".
Now, for the real debate. Was this a breakup album? The first track "I Know" and last track "No Hope" share the same lyrics, "I know you're mine, but still I die". What's different though is in the former, there was a sense of hope and nostalgia. It was hazy, more dreary, and dreamlike. The latter however, is clearer and more resolute, as you realise that this love is never going to work out and it's okay. So maybe Static was a personification of the duo's personal relationship. But even if it wasn't, it still delivered a beautiful portrayal of a love that was doomed from the beginning.
