Broken Bangles by Hanifa Deen

In this book, we follow Deen around the cities of the Bangladesh and Pakistan, meeting and talking to the women who are victims of their femicidal culture. It provided on-the-ground observations of how status, class, and education affects the perception of harm these women have about living in a theocracy that promotes violently misogynistic beliefs. She also introduces western influences and the prominent figures surrounding this issue, and how they are constantly intertwined nationally, and transnationally.

“Broken Bangles” is by no means a revolutionary piece of non-fiction. It does not mean to provide critical analysis or propose solutions to the problems of both states. It is still however, a very important book. Although every single day is a hard struggle towards self-emancipation, Deen makes us understand that these women are far from helpless. They are fighting everyday, and will continue to do so for however long it takes.
