Audrey Hobert (she/her) is a 27 y/o screenwriter turned singer-songwriter and Who's the Clown is her debut album. Prior to releasing her own album, Audrey Hobert already made her name as a TV writer for Nickelodeon and co-writing several songs on The Secret of Us. A short two years later, she blessed the world with "Sue Me" on May 9, 2025, reviving the pop music scene.
Before we get into the actual ratings, visit the making of this album! It's not unusual that writing comes so naturally to Hobert, and we should really take a moment to appreciate the lyrics of each song! With the album coming together in ~two years, her sources of inspiration ranged from common experiences (life, crushes, exes) to the Apple TV Steve Martin documentary. I think this is why the album resonated with me. Listening to it from start to end (NO SHUFFLING!) felt like I was experiencing the ups and down of a universal adventure – girlhood.
With the rise of the weird girl agenda and eradication of the clean girl aesthetic, Who's the Clown takes the lead as the ultimate quirky girl anthem, especially with songs like "Drive" and "Thirst Trap". The unsophisticated and candid portrayal of these shared experiences rejects shame and champions authenticity in fully feeling (especially if you feel like a loser!).
