"The Moustache" had been on my TBR for the longest time and I took the opportunity to start this book in my book club! Although short, Carrère's writing made the story seem almost endless with its constant shifts in reality which dragged me along Marc's psychotic trips. Not quite convinced it was a psychological thriller/horror, the story turned out to be such a gag towards the end...
Firstly, Marc pretending to be blind to ask a stranger about his moustache was the pinnacle of my day LOL. It was entertaining to watch him spiral every single moment, analysing and justifying the behaviours of the people around him to validate the existence of his moustache. BUT, this was before everything started to very aggressively mess with me as well! With every turn of the page, I was waiting for the grand "A-HA!" to appear, but it never happened. All I was left with was a purely unspeakable gut-wrenching feeling, that made me wonder what I was reading.
The fun thing about this book (if that's even possible) was that there was never substantial proof that Marc was in fact disturbed in any capacity, and this whole thing could have really been a big deceptive plan plotted against him just for the LOLs... Either way, what a miserable and nauseating way to end one's life. Although Carrére chose to close with the location of his death like some sort of diary entry, which may suggest it was an insanely elaborate fragment of Marc's sickeningly sick mind, WHO ACTUALLY KNOWS!
